Coelogyne cristata *fragrant

Coelogyne cristata is a fragrant mountain orchid, recognized by its white flowers with a golden-yellow crest on the labellum. It forms closely spaced pseudobulbs and blooms spectacularly when the plant is mature and experiences a cooler season.

Light and temperature. Provide bright, filtered light, without intense summer sun. It is better suited to a bright, cool location than to a very warm interior. The difference between day and night temperatures helps the growths mature and prepares the plant for flowering.

Watering and fertilizing. During growth, water thoroughly, then allow the substrate to approach dryness. After the pseudobulbs mature, gradually reduce watering without allowing the plant to become extremely dry. Apply diluted orchid fertilizer during the active period.

Substrate and repotting. The roots need air and a stable pot. Repot when new roots appear, in substrate for vigorous-growing orchids. Do not divide a small plant: a mature clump produces more flower spikes.

Signs to watch for. Wrinkled pseudobulbs indicate insufficient watering or compromised roots; soft stems indicate excess water. A lack of flowers is usually related to insufficient light, continuous warmth, or an immature plant.
