Epiphyllum rosu (Red Type Orchid Cactus) D12

Epiphyllum Red Type is a spectacular variety of epiphytic cactus with intense red blooms , part of the genus Epiphyllum , also popularly known as "orchid cactus" due to its large and exotic flowers. Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, this cactus is distinguished from desert cacti by its flat foliage and abundant flowering in humid conditions and filtered light.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Habit: Epiphytic or semi-epiphytic plant, with flattened, long, articulated stems that can reach over 50–100 cm in length. It has no actual leaves; what appears to be a leaf is actually a modified stem (cladodium).

• Stems: Flat, broad, with slightly wavy or lacy edges, light to dark green in color. They are flexible and can become slightly arched or flowing.

• Flowers: Very large (up to 15–20 cm in diameter), cup-shaped or star- shaped, intense red , sometimes with orange or burgundy hues. They appear at the tips of the segments, usually in spring or summer. They are fragrant, ephemeral (last 1–2 days), but flowering can be repeated in waves, if the plant is well cared for.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers filtered, indirect, but intense light . Can tolerate morning or afternoon sun, but should be protected from strong sunlight.

• Soil: Aerated and well-drained, the type for epiphytic orchids or tropical cacti – a mixture of peat, tree bark, perlite and leaf soil.

• Watering: Moderate. Water when the top layer of soil is dry. During the flowering and active growth period, watering should be more constant, but without excess water. Reduce in winter.

• Humidity: It appreciates an environment with medium to high atmospheric humidity , specific to its natural habitat.

• Recommended temperatures: Grows well in warm conditions. Does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. In regions with cold winters, keep indoors or in protected spaces.

• Fertilization: Fertilize monthly during spring-summer with a diluted fertilizer for flowering plants.
