Lithops, also known as "living stones," are small, intriguing plants native to southern Africa, which are relatively easy to grow as indoor plants. The first was discovered by William John Burchell in 1811 during a botanical expedition in southern Africa.
These plants, from the Mesembryanthemaceae (Aizoaceae) family, were named for their stone-like appearance: litos (= stone) and opsis (= like).
In their native habitats in Namibia and South Africa, they have evolved to blend so well with their surroundings—looking exactly like the sand and stones they live among, in shape, size, and color—that they can be quite difficult to spot, even for those trained and with years of experience.
