Fungal and Bacterial Diseases in Orchids | Treatment and Prevention

A spot on a leaf does not automatically mean a fungal or bacterial disease. Sunburn, cold water left on leaves overnight, pests, salt accumulation, and affected roots can produce similar signs. This guide helps observe symptoms and take first steps to identify potential problems and treatments but does not replace laboratory identification.

Act quickly if the leaf shows a soft, watery, foul-smelling spot or visibly enlarges. Isolate the plant, stop spraying on leaves, cut off affected parts, clean tools between cuts, and improve ventilation. Do not apply products randomly and try to use approved products.

Bacterial rots and spots

Pathogen: Pectobacterium (syn. Erwinia)

Symptoms: small watery spots on leaves, often with yellowish edges. If untreated, the infection will spread rapidly and affect roots and leaves, spreading more slowly in the case of rhizomes and pseudobulbs. An unpleasant odor may be noticed.

Affected taxa: Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, Grammatophyllum, Oncidium, Cambria.

Pathogen: Acidovorax (syn. Pseudomonas)

Symptoms: the most common and dangerous disease of the Phalaenopsis genus manifests as small, soft spots in the form of liquid-filled blisters, small in size, located anywhere on the leaves, initially green in color; later, as their size increases, the color changes to brown or black, drying out and appearing as sunken areas on the leaf surface. When the infection reaches the leaf tip, it secretes liquid infected with bacteria, which contributes to contaminating other plants. Prevalent in the warm season.

Affected taxa: Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, mainly any species.

Roots, pseudobulbs, and plant base

Brown rot, fungal root rot in orchids  

Disease: brown rot, fungal root rot

Pathogen: Rhizoctonia

Symptoms: root rot occurs when the growing medium decomposes, drainage is insufficient, and plants are overwatered, with its onset favored by mechanical injuries to the roots or salt deposits due to excessive fertilization. In species of the genus Cattleya, the pathogen establishes more slowly, moving from older pseudobulbs to newer ones, ascending along the pseudobulbs and causing their browning, followed by hardening. The roots of older plants, as well as other vegetative organs, will die. Although it is a root disease, symptoms can also be observed on aerial parts, resembling those caused by fusarium, namely yellowing of leaves, drying and shriveling, followed by leaf drop and browning of pseudobulbs from the lower part upwards.

Affected taxa: Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Miltonia, Oncidium and its hybrids, extending to the artificial genus Cambria.

Fungal spots on leaves

Anthracnose in orchids

Disease: anthracnose

Pathogens: Colletotrichum, Glomerella

Symptoms: affects the aerial parts of the plant, most often the leaves, whose tips brown from the apex downward toward the base. Spots develop, sometimes with concentric ring patterns, other times as numerous dark bands positioned transversely on the laminar surface. Affected areas are clearly defined, sometimes slightly sunken, while the rest of the leaf appears normal. Sporiferous bodies develop in infected areas. On flowers, watery, black, or brown pustules appear, generally taller and preferably on the dorsal parts of older petals and sepals, which can merge and cover the entire flower. The pathogen most frequently associated with anthracnose is Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (asexual stage, with the sexual stage known as Glomerella cingulata). Another known pathogen is Colletotrichum theobromicola, which has not been previously reported on orchids. It produces chlorotic (greenish) spots on the upper leaf surface, but these spots also correspond on the lower surface, forming sunken or necrotic spots as well.

Pathogens: Cercospora, Pseudocercospora, Guignardia, Phyllostycta, Septoria.

Symptoms:

Cercospora: the infection initially appears as a yellow spot on the underside of the leaf, becoming visible on the upper side shortly after. As the spot enlarges, it develops a slightly sunken, necrotic appearance and colors to brown-violet to black-violet. The spots continue to grow, forming circular or irregular patterns until they cover the entire leaf. The edges of the spots remain yellow. Heavily infected leaves fall prematurely, especially if the infection starts from their base.

Pseudocercospora: causes leaf spots that manifest differently depending on the pathogen species and orchid cultivar, often taking circular to nearly circular shapes that reflect the growth pattern of the fungal colony. Sometimes these spots are violet-black, with small and numerous brown or black dots toward the center as the spots enlarge. Other Pseudocercospora species produce smaller, irregularly shaped spots but in greater numbers. When larger leaf areas are affected, a general mosaic pattern appears on the upper leaf surface, while the lower areas are covered with dots representing sporiferous bodies that correspond to the pattern on the upper surface.

Guignardia: the first signs of infection appear as small, dark violet, elongated lesions on any leaf surface, arranged parallel to the leaf veins, taking on an elongated or diamond shape. Sometimes adjacent lesions merge, forming irregular shapes that can cover large leaf areas. With age, the centers of affected areas darken while sporiferous bodies develop inside, having a rough texture. The disease mainly affects species of the genera Ascocentrum and Vanda, as well as their hybrids. The pathogen is also known as Phyllosticta, referring to a different sexual stage of the same fungus.

Phyllosticta: the spots can start anywhere on the pseudobulbs or leaves as small, yellow, slightly sunken lesions. As they enlarge, they become round or oval and deepen, especially if the infection is on leaves. Over time, they darken to gray or dark brown, developing a slightly raised, reddish to violet-blackish border. Eventually, central sporiferous structures develop. Individual spots are about 6.5 mm in diameter. Leaves with severe infections may fall prematurely. The disease is favored by insufficient light conditions. Phyllosticta represents a different sexual stage of the pathogen Guignardia.

Septoria: small spots can appear on any leaf surface as tiny, sunken, yellowish lesions that continue to grow, turning brown or black, with circular or irregular shapes. They can also merge, forming large irregular patterns. Severely infected leaves may fall prematurely.

Affected taxa: Cattleya, Vanda, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis.

Spots on flowers: Botrytis

Disease: flower spotting

Pathogen: Botrytis

Symptoms: small spots, about 1 mm in diameter, on flowers, black or light brown in color. They can enlarge and cover the entire flower. Appear under high humidity conditions, especially if spent flowers are left on the flower stems or in contact with the growing medium.

Affected taxa: Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Vanda, Oncidium.

Disease: black rot

Pathogen: Pythium, Phytophthora

Symptoms: initially partially translucent spots that later turn black, large in size, with a tendency to spread rapidly, affecting any plant organ, especially leaves and new growths. Occurs mainly in warm and humid seasons.

Affected taxa: Cattleya, Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Epidendrum, Cochleanthes, and many other species.

Disease: crown rot

Pathogen: Sclerotinia

Symptoms: the main symptom of crown rot is the rapid falling and rotting of roots, pseudobulbs, and the lower parts of the leaves, which turn yellow-cream, and the tissues later brown due to the invasion of other pathogens. Ultimately, the disease destroys the entire basal portion of the plants. Affected leaves yellow, wilt, and die. Small yellow or gray spots resembling mustard seeds will be observed on the affected tissues, representing the resistant forms of the fungus.

Affected taxa: Brassidium, Brassia, Oncidium, Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Cattleya.

Prevention: cultivation hygiene and inspecting new plants

Hygiene in cultivation is the first preventive measure. Quickly remove faded flowers, fallen leaves, dead roots, and any degraded tissue that remains wet in the pot or growing area. Plant debris can retain moisture and spores, especially when plants are close together.

Cut away advancing lesions. If a leaf develops a soft, watery, or enlarging spot, isolate the plant and proactively remove the affected part by cutting into healthy tissue. Sterilize the blade or scissors between each cut and between plants; do not use the same tool on a suspect plant and then on a healthy one.

Inspect every new plant. Check the front and back of leaves, the crown, pseudobulbs, visible roots, substrate, and any spots on flowers. Keep the new plant separate from the collection for an observation period, especially if it arrives with spotted leaves or damaged tissues after transport.

Water the substrate, not the leaves. Don’t let water remain between leaves or on flowers overnight. Water in the morning when possible so surfaces dry by evening. Avoid water pooling in the pot and adjust watering frequency to light, temperature, and how quickly the substrate dries.

Maintain ventilation and space between pots. High humidity without air movement encourages many problems. Don’t crowd the plants, remove dead leaves around them, and don’t let drained water pass from one pot to another.

Check the roots when repotting. Degraded substrate, salt buildup, and affected roots are common starting points for rot. Repot when the substrate structure no longer allows drainage and ventilation, not just according to the calendar.
