Matucana madisoniorum is a rare and attractive cactus native to Peru, prized for its globular, symmetrical shape and its spectacular flowers. The plant has a small, deep green body covered with rounded ribs and short or even absent spines, which gives it an elegant and distinctive appearance. Its flowers are large, tubular, red, orange or sometimes pink in color, and open at the top of the cactus, adding a touch of exoticism.

Care:

  1. Light : Matucana madisoniorum prefers bright, indirect light. It can be exposed to direct sunlight in the morning or evening, but should be protected from intense midday sunlight, which can cause burns.

  2. Watering : Like most cacti, it needs moderate watering. Let the soil dry completely between waterings. During the dormant period (winter), watering should be reduced considerably or even stopped completely.

  3. Soil : It grows best in well-drained soil, suitable for cacti and succulents. A mixture of potting soil with sand or perlite is ideal to prevent excess water accumulation.

  4. Temperature : Prefers warm temperatures, between 20-30°C, but tolerates lower temperatures, provided they do not fall below 5°C. It is sensitive to frost.

  5. Fertilization : During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize monthly with a cactus fertilizer, diluted according to the instructions. No fertilization is required during the dormant period.

  6. Repotting : Matucana madisoniorum grows slowly and requires repotting every 2-3 years or when the pot becomes too small. Use a well-drained pot.

  7. Flowering : Its flowers usually appear during the summer, and to encourage flowering, give the plant a dry rest period during the winter.

  8. Features : It is a relatively hardy and easy-to-maintain plant, ideal for lovers of exotic cacti. Due to its unique shape and flowers, Matucana madisoniorum is a centerpiece in any cactus collection.
