Hoya pachyclada 'Variegata' - fragrant flowers

Hoya pachyclada 'Variegata' is a collector’s cultivar, appreciated for its thick, fleshy, variegated foliage. In the product images, the cream to yellowish-green areas form irregular central sectors surrounded by green margins. The pattern and proportion of the lighter areas may naturally vary from one leaf to another. The plant retains the compact growth habit and robust stems characteristic of the species, while the pattern on each leaf gives it a distinctive appearance even outside the flowering period.

Name and identification. The name Hoya pachyclada was published by Kerr in 1939 in Bulletin of Miscellaneous Information, Royal Gardens, Kew.

Characteristics. The species is an epiphytic plant with a compact, vine-like growth habit. It forms short, thick, succulent stems, while the leaves are opposite, obovate, leathery, and fleshy. In this selection, the irregular central variegation contrasts with the intense green of the margins, giving each leaf its own pattern. Growth is often slow, but the rate may vary depending on growing conditions.

Flowers and fragrance. Under good growing conditions, the plant may flower repeatedly when provided with suitable care. The waxy, fragrant flowers appear in dense, often nearly spherical umbels. The petals may be cream-white, yellowish, or very pale greenish-white, while the corona is white to cream, sometimes with a reddish tint in the centre. An umbel may contain approximately 20–25 flowers.
