A botanical species that finds its place in any orchid collection, discovered near Veracruz, Mexico, by Karl Theodore Hartweg, and described by John Lindley (February 5, 1799 – November 1, 1865, English botanist, gardener, and orchid specialist) in 1837. Young plants remain compact, yet they can also be grown into impressive specimens in relatively short periods. Due to its foliage resembling blades of grass, it is an attractive houseplant even outside the blooming period. Its common name, Coconut Orchid, alludes to the strong scent of the flowers, which recalls the aroma of coconuts.
Because of its wide geographical distribution, Maxillaria tenuifolia easily adapts to a broad range of environmental conditions.
