Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa, frequently sold under the name Rhipsalis Red Coral, is a spectacular tropical epiphytic cactus, prized for its flat, elongated, trailing stems, which can change color depending on the light. In bright conditions, the segments may develop intense shades of burgundy red, bronze, and reddish violet, while green tones predominate in lower light.

It is an excellent plant for hanging pots and high shelves, where its stems can grow freely in a cascade. Unlike desert cacti, Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa comes from tropical environments and prefers a more organic potting mix and somewhat more consistent moisture.

🌵 Botanical characteristics

  • Botanical name: Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa
  • Common name: Rhipsalis Red Coral
  • Family: Cactaceae
  • Plant type: tropical epiphytic cactus
  • Growth habit: trailing, branching
  • Stems: flat, elongated, fleshy, with slightly wavy edges
  • Color: green to red, burgundy, and bronze, depending on light and growing conditions
  • Flowers: small and pale, appearing along the edges of mature segments
  • Fruits: small and decorative, may appear after pollination

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers bright, filtered light; brighter light without sunburn encourages red tones
  • Watering: moderate; allow the potting mix to dry out partially between waterings, but do not leave it completely dry for very long periods
  • Potting mix: airy and well-draining, with a higher organic content than mixes for desert cacti
  • Humidity: appreciates moderate humidity
  • Temperature: prefers around 18-28°C
  • Winter: reduce watering slightly as growth slows
  • Fertilizing: light feeding during the active growing season
  • Cold tolerance: does not tolerate frost; temperatures above approximately 10-12°C are recommended
  • Placement: ideal for hanging pots, where the stems can grow freely in a cascade

🌱 Secret Garden potting mix recommendation

👉 For optimal growth, we recommend Secret Garden Potting Mix for Cacti, Succulents & Adenium, but for Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa it is ideal for the mix to retain enough organic matter, as this is a tropical epiphytic cactus and prefers more moisture than desert cacti.

📌 Note

Coloration is naturally variable and may differ significantly depending on light, temperature, season, and the age of the segments. The plant may be predominantly green in certain conditions and may gradually develop red, burgundy, or bronze tones when it receives enough light.

The stems are flexible and may have small scars, bends, dry spots, or superficial breaks resulting from growth, handling, or transport. These are mainly cosmetic and do not normally affect the plant's health.
