Nepenthes 'Gaya' D9 - A spectacular carnivorous plant!
Nepenthes 'Gaya' is certainly one of the most admired carnivorous plants. These are the plants that match the stereotypical vision of what carnivorous plants are.
IMPORTANT: Insectivorous / carnivorous plants pose no danger to humans. Their digestive juice is at most a good disinfectant for hands! Many come from the misty jungles of Southeast Asia, forming vines that climb trees, and their traps really look like traps.
The trap of this plant is a sealed pitcher with slippery edges, very difficult for prey to climb. The mouth of the pitcher is decorated with a structure called the peristome. The peristome helps retain the prey and also directs the prey into the pitcher. The pitcher has a lid on top. This helps keep rainwater inside the pitcher, but its main function is to attract prey due to its color and the presence of nectar. Prey hanging on the underside of the lid is at risk of falling into the trap.
Care instructions for Nepenthes
Humidity: Abundant
Light requirement: Partial shade
Soil type: A mix of equal parts peat, vermiculite, and sand. Nepenthes can anchor their roots on tree bark, leading an epiphytic life - but they need high humidity.
Fertilization: The plant generally tolerates well without fertilization, especially if it has abundant food or is epiphytic. In the absence of these factors, it can be fertilized monthly in spring and summer, and once every two months in winter, with a liquid fertilizer intended for orchids. Propagation: Propagation can be done in spring and summer by air layering or, more simply, by taking cuttings from shoots. These are kept at high humidity and 20-23°C, in mini-greenhouses, for reliable rooting.
Diseases and pests: The plant can be attacked by gray rot under conditions of excessive humidity of the air or substrate. Occasionally, as a consequence of poor conditions, scale insects or aphids may appear.
Care: To properly develop and color the pitcher traps, they need constant and definitely filtered light throughout the year. They are very sensitive to dry air. If the temperature exceeds 28°C, the plant requires misting. The substrate should be watered so that it is permanently moist but not waterlogged. Water must be removed from the saucer after each watering.
Height including pot: 10-15 cm
Pot diameter: 9 cm
Note: Some pitchers do not show the specific variegation because they are immature. The number and size of pitchers vary from one specimen to another.
Pitchers may show damage due to transport and temperature variations.
