Lycaste skinneri alba, also known as Lycaste virginalis, is a species from Central America, valued for its large, waxy, white, intensely fragrant flowers. A mature plant may produce several individual flowers, usually from autumn to spring; each flower remains decorative for several weeks.

Identity and flowering. The plant forms large pseudobulbs with long leaves, and the flowers emerge from the base of the youngest mature pseudobulb. The pure white color of the alba form has made the species important in Lycaste hybridization. Plants may be delivered without flowers, and the flowering cycle depends on the plant’s maturity and the conditions during the previous season.

Light and temperature. Provide bright, filtered light and an airy location. Lycaste skinneri prefers cooler conditions than many houseplant orchids; avoid heat waves, very hot windows, and dry air. The difference between day and night temperatures helps the pseudobulbs mature.

Watering and fertilizing. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain away. When the leaves begin to recede after the pseudobulbs have matured, gradually reduce watering without forcing extreme dryness. During the active period, apply diluted orchid fertilizer.

Potting medium and repotting. Use a stable pot and an airy mix that retains moderate moisture; potting medium for vigorous-growing orchids is a suitable base. Repot when new roots appear and avoid dividing a small plant.

Signs to watch for. Wrinkled pseudobulbs indicate thirst or damaged roots; soft bases indicate overwatering. A lack of flowers is most often related to insufficient light, consistently high temperatures, or a plant that has not yet reached maturity.
