Gymnocalycium bruchii is a small-sized cactus, native to Argentina, known for its compact appearance and colorful flowers. Here is a description and some care tips:

Description:

  • Shape: It is a globe-shaped cactus, usually about 3-5 cm in diameter. Sometimes it can form small clusters of plants.
  • Colour: The body is green or greenish-blue, covered with pronounced ribs.
  • Spines: The spines are short, white or yellow, and not very sharp, giving it a decorative look.
  • Flowers: Gymnocalycium bruchii produces flowers large in relation to the plant’s size, in pink, white, or sometimes light red. The flowers appear in summer and last a few days.
  • Roots: It has fibrous roots, which allow it to survive in poorer soils.

Care:

  1. Light: This species prefers bright places but not direct strong sunlight during summer, as it can cause burns on the cactus surface. Ideally, it should be kept in a bright spot with filtered sunlight.

  2. Temperature: Gymnocalycium bruchii tolerates lower temperatures, even down to about 0°C, if kept completely dry. Ideally, the optimal temperature during summer is between 18-26°C.

  3. Watering: Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as the roots can rot. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dry, thus reducing the risk of rot.

  4. Soil: Prefers well-drained soil, special for cacti, containing sand and gravel to allow water drainage. Avoid using soil too rich in organic matter, as this can lead to moisture buildup.

  5. Fertilizing: Fertilizing can be done once a month during the growing period (spring and summer) with a fertilizer special for cacti, low in nitrogen, to avoid too rapid growth or deforming the plant.

  6. Repotting: This cactus can be transplanted every 2-3 years to renew the soil and prevent root compaction.

  7. Flowering: To stimulate flowering, it is important to provide a resting period during winter, with lower temperatures and no watering. This will help the plant conserve energy and produce flowers in the next season.

Gymnocalycium bruchii is relatively easy to care for, suitable both for beginners and experienced cactus collectors.
