Cotyledon pendens is a species of succulent plant native to South Africa, valued for its unique, fleshy leaves that hang gracefully from its branches. This plant belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is often grown as a houseplant or in rock gardens due to its decorative appearance and relatively low care requirements.

Description

  • Leaves: Cotyledon pendens has thick, fleshy leaves ranging from light green to dark green, sometimes with red or purple edges. The leaves are elongated with pointed tips, growing in opposite pairs along the stems.
  • Flowers: The plant produces bell-shaped flowers, usually in shades of orange, yellow, or red. The flowers appear in the warm season, adding extra charm to the plant.
  • Growth: It is a moderately fast-growing plant, with stems that can stretch out and hang down.

Care

  • Light: Prefers strong, indirect light but can also tolerate direct sunlight for a few hours a day. If kept indoors, a sunny window is ideal.
  • Watering: As a succulent, Cotyledon pendens stores water in its leaves, so it requires moderate watering. The soil should dry out completely between waterings. In the cold season, watering should be significantly reduced.
  • Soil: Prefers a well-drained soil mix, specific for succulents or cacti. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature: Thrives at temperatures between 15°C and 25°C but can tolerate lower temperatures down to 5°C for short periods. It must be protected from frost.
  • Fertilizer: Can be fed with a diluted fertilizer for succulents applied once a month during the active growing period (spring and summer).
  • Soil renewal and repotting: It is recommended to renew the soil every two years and to repot if the plant has outgrown its pot.
