Full description and specifications

Cotyledon pendens is a species of succulent plant native to South Africa, prized for its unique, fleshy leaves that hang elegantly from its branches. This plant is part of the Crassulaceae family and is often grown as an indoor plant or in rock gardens due to its decorative appearance and relatively low care requirements.

Description

  • Leaves : Cotyledon pendens has thick, fleshy leaves, light green to dark green, sometimes with red or purple edges. The shape of the leaves is elongated, with sharp tips, growing in opposite pairs along the stems.
  • Flowers : The plant produces bell-shaped flowers, usually in shades of orange, yellow or red. The flowers appear in the warm season, adding an extra attraction to the plant.
  • Growth : It is a plant that grows moderately fast, with stems that can stretch and hang.

Care

  • Light : Prefers strong, indirect light, but can also tolerate direct sun for a few hours a day. If it is kept indoors, a sunny window is ideal.
  • Watering : As a succulent, Cotyledon pendens retains water in its leaves, so it requires moderate watering. The soil must dry completely between waterings. In the cold season, watering must be significantly reduced.
  • Soil : Prefers a well-drained soil mixture, specific for succulents or cacti. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature : It does well at temperatures between 15°C and 25°C, but can tolerate lower temperatures up to 5°C for short periods. It must be protected from frost.
  • Fertilizer : It can be fertilized with a diluted fertilizer for succulents applied once a month during the period of active growth (spring and summer).
  • Renew the soil and transplant : It is recommended to renew the soil once every two years and to carry out the transplant if the plant has become too big for its pot.
