Hoya manipurensis

Hoya manipurensis is a prized collector’s species valued for its compact, almost shrubby growth habit and its unusually shaped leaves, resembling an inverted heart. Unlike many Hoyas with long, trailing stems, it forms more rigid, upright stems. Growth is relatively slow, but the plant can flower even when small, producing small, atypical flowers for the genus with a distinctive appearance.

Foliage and growth habit. The leaves are opposite, small, thick, and fleshy. Their shape varies from obovate to obtriangular or obcordate, with a narrowed base and a tip that is often slightly notched or nearly straight. This unusual outline, resembling an inverted heart or a fan, is one of the plant’s main attractions. Mature leaves are smooth; fine fuzz is characteristic mainly of young growth and inflorescences.

Flowers. The flowers are small, tubular, and urn-shaped, grouped in discreet inflorescences close to the stem. The corolla is pale, usually cream to yellowish green, and covered with fine hairs. Their unusual appearance is reminiscent of the flowers of certain Dischidia species. The plant can flower even when small, and the flowers may last for approximately three weeks. The fragrance is subtle.

Botanical identity and origin. The currently accepted botanical name is Hoya manipurensis Deb. The species has had an unusual taxonomic history and was previously treated under names such as Micholitzia obcordata, Dischidia obcordata, and Antiostelma manipurense. Phylogenetic studies and floral morphology support its inclusion in the genus Hoya. Its native range extends from eastern Nepal to southwestern Yunnan Province, including northeastern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and northern Thailand. In nature, it grows in subtropical mountain forests, attached to trees or rocks.
