Hoya callistophylla is an epiphytic vine native to Borneo, cultivated for its thick foliage, with dark green pinnate veins on a green background. Mature leaves can reach approximately 25 cm in length and 9 cm in width. The shoots can become long, although growth is fairly slow. Under good growing conditions, umbels with small, lightly fragrant flowers ranging from pale yellow to cream or golden may appear. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is thick and firm, elliptical or lanceolate, with prominent veins. On young leaves, the veins may be paler and then darken, without becoming as nearly black as those of the commercial selection 'Black Cat'. A mature specimen can produce vines up to approximately 5 m long, but growth remains slow. The veining pattern is a characteristic of the species, not variegation. The pot is supplied full, with vines at different stages of growth.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, grouped in umbels containing several dozen flowers. Their color is described in cultivation sources as pale yellow, cream, or golden, sometimes with brownish shades. They are fragrant, with a light scent. Individual flowers last only a short time on the plant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. Hoya callistophylla T.Green is an accepted botanical name, published in 2000. The species is native to Borneo, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome.
