Gymnocalycium denudatum
Gymnocalycium denudatum is a cactus native to the arid regions of South America, especially Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. It is known for its globular shape, usually dark green, with smooth ribs and no very prominent spines. Sometimes, it may have a few small, thin spines, but these are rarely aggressive. During the flowering period, it produces large, spectacular flowers in shades of white or pale pink, which appear from the top of the plant.
The care of this plant includes several essential aspects:
Light: Gymnocalycium denudatum prefers exposure to indirect or partially filtered light. Avoid direct intense sunlight, as it can burn the plant.
Watering: Water the cactus moderately in the warm season (spring and summer), letting the soil dry between waterings. In the cold period (autumn and winter), reduce watering considerably, because the plant goes into rest and does not need much water. Excessive wetting can lead to rotting of the roots.
Soil: Use a well-drained soil, especially for cacti and succulents. A combination of soil for cacti with coarse sand or perlite will ensure proper drainage, preventing water stagnation at the roots.
Temperature: Gymnocalycium denudatum prefers warm temperatures, but it can also tolerate lower temperatures, up to approximately 5-10°C, provided it is dry. It would be ideal to keep it in an environment where the temperature does not drop below 10°C.
Fertilizer: Apply a special fertilizer for cacti once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). There is no need for fertilization during the winter, when the plant is at rest.
Replanting: Gymnocalycium denudatum does not need frequent replanting. Replant it only when it becomes obvious that it has exceeded the dimensions of the pot or the soil is no longer suitable. When replanting, make sure you use a pot with good drainage.
