Clematis armandii (also known as evergreen clematis, Armand clematis, or evergreen clematis) is a vigorous, perennial, evergreen climber from the Ranunculaceae family, native to central and southern China and northern Myanmar (Burma). It is one of the few evergreen clematis varieties, valued for its glossy foliage year-round and abundant early flowering that fills the garden with a sweet fragrance.

The plant grows quickly (up to 4-9 m long and 3-4.5 m wide), with woody stems that cling by twisted petioles. The leaves are large trifoliate compounds (up to 15 cm), leathery, dark glossy green, with lanceolate-ovate, pendulous leaflets, and new shoots bronze-red in spring – a stunning effect!

Flowers appear early (late winter to early spring, February-April, depending on climate), in dense panicles on old wood, star-shaped, cream-white to pure white (2-6 cm diameter), with 4-8 sepals (showy petals) and cream stamens. They are extremely abundant, covering the plant like a cloud, and have an intensely sweet fragrance (vanilla, almond, or pleasant floral soap) – one of the most fragrant Clematis species!

After flowering, decorative fruits with persistent fluffy styles (plumed achenes) appear.

Main features:

  • Size: large, vigorous (15-30 ft long, 10-15 ft wide)
  • Leaf type: trifoliate, leathery, glossy green, evergreen
  • Flower type: white/cream or pink star-shaped, intensely fragrant (vanilla/almond), in dense panicles
  • Flowering period: late winter – early spring
  • Fragrance: yes, strong and pleasant (almond-vanilla scented)

Simple and practical care (easy to grow but needs space):

  • Light: full sun or partial shade (top in sun, roots in shade – classic for Clematis); tolerates light shade but flowers better in good light
  • Temperature: cold hardy (USDA zones 7-9/10, tolerates down to -15°C, but protect from strong cold winds in winter); tolerates heat well. Protect plants in the first year.
  • Watering: moderate – moist but well-drained soil; avoid excess water (does not tolerate permanently wet soil)
  • Soil: rich in organic matter, well-drained, neutral to alkaline (pH 6-7.5+); mulch at the base to keep roots cool
  • Support: trellis, pergola, fence, trees – provides solid support
  • Pruning: group 1 – prune immediately after flowering (remove dead wood, control size); do not prune early spring!
  • Fertilizing: in spring with fertilizer for Clematis or general flower fertilizer

An excellent choice for fences, pergolas, walls, or hiding unsightly areas – provides greenery all year, spectacular early flowering, and an intense fragrance that fills the air! Vigorous and hardy but can become invasive in small spaces – ideal for large or Mediterranean gardens.
