Calycanthus floridus (Orchideenbaum, Carolina Spice)
Calycanthus floridus, also known as "Sweetsshrub" or "Carolina Allspice", is a shrub native to the southeastern United States. It is appreciated for its aromatic flowers, dense foliage and ability to adapt to a variety of growing conditions.
The shrub can reach a height of 2-4 meters, with a similar width, and has a round shape and a dense appearance. The leaves are oval, dark green, and can reach 10-15 cm in length.
The flowers are perhaps the most attractive feature of Calycanthus floridus. They are dark brown or red-brown in color, have the shape of a star with many petals and a strong and sweet, spicy smell, similar to that of anise or ripe fruit. Flowers appear in spring and early summer and are often followed by capsule-like fruits "separating" a capsule.
Calycanthus floridus is a hardy plant that can grow in full sun or partial shade and adapts to a variety of soils. It is also resistant to most diseases and pests.
