Calathea Ornata Sanderiana (Pfauenpflanze)

Calathea sanderiana, also known as Goeppertia ornata ‘Sanderiana’, is a tropical plant valued for its decorative foliage and distinctive elegance.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Foliage: Lance-shaped leaves, dark green in color, crossed by fine pink or white stripes, creating a remarkable visual effect. The underside of the leaves is a deep violet, adding a subtle and refined contrast.

• Growth: A perennial plant with compact growth, forming dense clumps. Under ideal conditions, it can reach a height of 30–90 cm and a similar width.

• Movement: Exhibits nyctinastic movements, with leaves rising at night and lowering during the day, a phenomenon that gives it the popular name “praying plant.” 

🔹 Care conditions:

• Light: Prefers indirect, diffused light. Direct exposure to sunlight can cause leaf discoloration.

• Soil: Well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, with neutral or slightly acidic pH.

• Watering: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not soaked. It is recommended to use filtered or rainwater to avoid the buildup of harmful minerals.

• Humidity: A high humidity level (above 60%) is essential. A humidifier can be used or the plant can be placed on a layer of damp gravel to maintain ambient moisture.

• Temperature: Moderate temperatures. Avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

• Fertilizing: Apply a diluted liquid fertilizer, specific for indoor plants, once a month during the active growing period (spring–summer).

• Use: Ideal for decorating interiors, adding a tropical and refined accent to any space.

• Cleaning: Leaves can be wiped periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain a glossy appearance.

Calathea sanderiana is a special plant that, with proper care, can become an elegant focal point in any interior, offering a visual spectacle through its unique foliage and fascinating behavior.
