Unofficial figures in horticulture say that most potted plants are lost because of overwatering. This is not a laboratory statistic, and it does not explain every plant that dies. But it is worth remembering: when a plant starts to look unhealthy, the first thing to check is the substrate, not the shelf of treatments.
Do you drink water? Do you stay hydrated?
Yes.
But would you like to stand permanently with your feet in water?
No, of course not.
Then why assume that plants like it?
Plants need water. But their roots also need air. When the substrate remains permanently wet, the air between its particles gradually disappears, and the roots can no longer function properly. This is where many problems begin that, on the surface, appear completely different: yellow leaves, soft leaves, halted or slow growth, bud drop, an unpleasant smell in the pot, or spots that appear without an obvious cause.

Overwatering does not necessarily mean giving a lot of water at once
A plant can be overwatered even if it receives only a small amount of water with each watering. The problem is the frequency: you water again before the substrate has dried sufficiently for that plant, in the light and temperature it currently has.
A pot is not a glass of water. It is a mixture of substrate, roots, and small spaces through which air must also circulate. If these spaces remain full of water for days on end, the roots begin to suffer. Then microorganisms appear that break down the tissue that has already been weakened.
The symptoms can resemble a lack of water. A plant with compromised roots can no longer absorb water properly, so its leaves droop even though the substrate is wet. Therefore, a soft leaf does not automatically mean that the plant needs watering.
Look inside the pot. Heavy substrate that stays wet for a long time and smells of stale moisture, along with soft or visibly degraded roots, indicates a recurring watering problem. The next stage—the appearance of mold on the surface—affects the quality of human life in indoor spaces.
In the cold season, water stagnates longer than we think
In winter, a plant near a window may live in a microclimate completely different from the rest of the room. The thermometer in the middle of the living room shows 23°C, but next to the window it may show 18°C, especially at night, when the outdoor temperature naturally drops quickly.
This matters because at lower temperatures, with little light, the plant grows slowly and uses much less water or none at all. The substrate dries slowly. If there is also a radiator beneath the windowsill, the foliage may be exposed to warm, dry air while the roots remain cold and wet. The plant may seem to need water because its leaves soften, but watering again can worsen exactly the problem that weakened it.
With succulents, cacti, and plants that are dormant, this rule is even more important. During this period, they do not consume water as they do in summer. Do not keep the pot wet just because “it is time to water”—you can go without watering during the cold season for even several months.
Water in the saucer or decorative cover pot must be drained. A full saucer is not a reserve for the plant, but an area where the base of the pot remains constantly wet.

A “watering schedule” does not work for all plants
“I water once a week” is an easy habit to follow, but it rarely works well for a varied collection. A large pot dries more slowly than a small one. Terracotta loses water faster than plastic (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Sphagnum retains water differently from bark, all-purpose potting soil, coco coir, or a mineral substrate. A plant receiving good light and actively growing uses water and nutrients differently from one kept in cool conditions with little light.
If you have several plants, do not water them all at the same time just because it is Saturday. Lift each pot. Check the substrate and its weight. Notice how long it takes to dry after a normal watering. That is the plant’s rhythm, not the one written on the calendar.
Sometimes very dry substrate repels water. You water, and the water immediately slips along the inside wall of the pot and exits through a single area without properly moistening the root ball and substrate. Water gradually, allow the substrate and roots to hydrate, and observe whether the water comes out relatively evenly through the drainage holes.
For orchids, the difference between substrates is even more noticeable. Sphagnum behaves differently from bark, and different orchid groups have different rhythms. A Cattleya with pseudobulbs does not require the same watering routine as a Phalaenopsis. Nor should a plant recently moved from sphagnum to bark be watered according to its old schedule.
Fungus gnats show you that something is staying wet for too long
Fungus gnats do not appear out of nowhere. The adults are mainly a nuisance, but the larvae live in moist substrate, where they find decomposing organic matter and fungi. When there are many of them, they can damage the fine roots of young or already weakened plants.
Traps for the adults can reduce their numbers, but they do not solve the cause. The first step is to adjust watering: no standing water in saucers, no substrate left permanently wet, and no plant debris left on the surface of the pot. If the substrate is old, compacted, or full of dead roots, repotting may be more useful than repeating treatments.
What to check before watering “just a little more”
You do not need to turn every watering into a laboratory experiment. But a few simple observations can prevent many problems:
- is the substrate dry only on the surface, or deeper down as well?
- does the pot have drainage holes, and was the saucer emptied after the last watering?
- are the visible roots firm, or soft and degraded?
- is the plant actively growing, or is it kept cool with little light?
- has it been moved, repotted, transported, or exposed to a draft?
If you are not sure whether it should be watered today, check again tomorrow. For many plants, one extra day in nearly dry substrate is easier to manage than watering again when a pot has not had time to dry.
Plants do not die because you have “failed”
There can be many explanations. Transport stress, a frequently opened window, moving the plant, an unsuitable substrate, a temperature difference, or a long period without sufficient light can completely change the way the plant uses water. Plants are living things, and many of them come from climates very different from that of an apartment. We ask them to adapt to windows, radiators, vacations, dry air, and seasons that do not resemble their place of origin. Some adapt easily. Others do not.
When you lose a plant, it is worth observing what happened rather than immediately looking for someone to blame. Check the roots, substrate, light, and temperature. Then change the habit that caused the problem. Most of the time, the next plant will benefit from this observation.
Stop overwatering your plants. Watering is not a fixed routine. Adjust it according to how quickly the substrate dries, the plant’s growth rate, and the actual conditions where it is kept.
