Camellia sasanqua Bonsai is an elegant ornamental plant, trained and cultivated in the bonsai style, valued for its glossy, evergreen foliage and delicate blooms that usually appear from autumn through early winter.

Compared with many varieties of Camellia japonica, Camellia sasanqua blooms earlier and has a more delicate appearance, with slightly smaller leaves and a naturally more open growth habit. The bonsai form highlights the trunk, branching and compact canopy, transforming the plant into an exceptional decorative specimen for a terrace, balcony, veranda or garden.

🌿 Botanical characteristics

  • Family: Theaceae

  • Common name: Autumn camellia / Sasanqua camellia

  • Plant type: evergreen ornamental shrub, trained in the bonsai style

  • Leaves: small to medium-sized, glossy, deep green

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers good light, with gentle morning or afternoon sun; in very hot areas, it benefits from protection from strong midday sun

  • Watering: regular and balanced; the substrate should be kept slightly moist, but without standing water

  • Substrate: acidic to slightly acidic, airy and well-drained

  • Humidity: appreciates moderate atmospheric humidity and a well-ventilated environment

  • Temperature: prefers moderate temperatures and outdoor conditions

  • Cold hardiness: has good resistance to low temperatures, but specimens grown in bonsai pots are more sensitive to frost than plants grown directly in the ground

  • Fertilization: fertilize moderately during the active growing period with products suitable for acid-loving plants

  • Pruning: carried out after flowering or during the growing period to maintain the shape and encourage branching

🌱 Secret Garden substrate recommendation

👉 For optimal growth, we recommend an acid-loving plant substrate that is airy and well-drained, suitable for Camellia, Azalea and Rhododendron. It is important for the substrate to maintain balanced moisture without remaining permanently waterlogged.

What makes it special

  • spectacular and elegant bonsai form

  • evergreen foliage that is decorative all year round

  • autumn flowering, during a period when few plants are still in bloom

  • refined appearance, suitable for terraces and collections

  • can be shaped and kept compact through regular pruning

  • combines the appearance of an ornamental shrub with the aesthetics of a bonsai

  • becomes visually more interesting as the trunk and branching mature

📌 Note: The appearance of each specimen may naturally vary depending on the shape of the trunk, degree of branching, number of buds and stage of development. Flowers may be temporarily absent outside the flowering season.

Plants cultivated in bonsai form are more sensitive to the substrate drying out completely and to the roots freezing, as the volume of soil in the pot is limited.
