Frailea alacriportana, a miniature cactus with yellow flowers

Frailea alacriportana is a horticultural name still frequently used for a miniature South American cactus, currently considered a synonym of the accepted species Frailea gracillima. 

It is a small cactus with a globular to elongated-cylindrical body, marked by ribs and covered with fine spines. Over time, it may produce lateral offsets and form small clusters. Its compact size and delicate appearance make it especially suitable for collections of miniature cacti.

One of the distinctive features of the genus Frailea is the behavior of its flowers: they are relatively large compared with the plant, intensely yellow, but need sufficient warmth and light to open fully. Under certain conditions, the flowers may remain closed and self-pollinate—a phenomenon known as cleistogamy.

🌞 Growing conditions and care

• Light: prefers a very bright position. It can tolerate direct sunlight after gradual acclimatization, but small plants should be protected from extreme overheating.

• Substrate: very well-drained and airy. Although it is a cactus, Frailea should not be treated exactly like an extreme desert species.

• Watering: moderate during the active period, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Compared with many desert cacti, it appreciates somewhat more consistent moisture during the growing period, without waterlogging.

• Winter: reduce watering considerably, especially if the plant is kept at lower temperatures.

• Temperature: prefers warmth during the active period, but the combination of excessive temperatures, stagnant moisture and poor ventilation should be avoided.

• Flowering: warmth and intense light encourage the flowers to open. In the absence of suitable conditions, the buds may self-pollinate without opening fully.

• Cold tolerance: exposure to frost is not recommended. When grown in Romania, the plant should be overwintered in a protected, bright and dry space.
