Opuntia inamoena is a species of cactus native to Mexico, belonging to the Cactaceae family. The cactus can reach considerable sizes and produces yellow or red flowers, which are followed by edible fruits.
Care Instructions
Being a desert cactus, Opuntia inamoena requires a well-drained environment and dry conditions to develop properly:
🌿 Light: Preferably strong direct light. Exposure to at least 6 hours of sunlight per day is recommended.
🌡️ Temperature: Tolerates temperatures between 5-40°C. It can survive short periods of frost but is sensitive to high humidity during the cold season.
💧 Watering: Very limited! Water once every 2-3 weeks in summer and once every 4-6 weeks in winter. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
🌱 Soil: Extremely well-drained soil, ideally a cactus mix based on sand, gravel, and perlite, to prevent water accumulation.
🌿 Fertilizing: Apply a fertilizer for cacti (NPK 5-10-10) once every 2 months during the growing season (spring-summer).
🪴 Repotting: Necessary every 3-4 years to allow root development and to renew the soil.
⚠ Warning! Handling with thick gloves is recommended, as the spines and glochids can cause severe skin irritation.
