Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso', also known as Lavandin Grosso, is one of the best-known and most widely cultivated hybrid lavender varieties, valued for its vigorous growth, intense fragrance, and long flower stems bearing abundant spikes of violet-blue flowers.

Compared with many varieties of Lavandula angustifolia, 'Grosso' has more vigorous growth, blooms somewhat later, and produces longer flower stems. It is highly suitable for borders, mass plantings, Mediterranean gardens, cut and dried flowers, and is one of the classic varieties cultivated for aromatic oil production.

  • Plant type: evergreen perennial subshrub

  • Growth habit: bushy, dense, and vigorous

  • Leaves: narrow, aromatic, gray-green

  • Flowers: deep violet to violet-blue

  • Flower stems: long, held above the foliage

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight; flowering and fragrance are more intense in very bright locations

  • Watering: moderate after planting; once well established, it tolerates periods of drought very well

  • Growing medium: light, airy, and very well drained; it does not tolerate heavy, constantly wet soils

  • pH: adapts to several soil types but prefers neutral to alkaline soils

  • Humidity: prefers well-ventilated air and conditions without persistent excess moisture

  • Fertilization: low; excessive fertilization may encourage vegetative growth at the expense of flowering

  • Pruning: trimming after flowering is recommended to maintain a compact shape; avoid severe pruning into old wood

  • Frost hardiness: has good cold tolerance, but drainage is essential during winter; cold, waterlogged soil is more dangerous than dry cold

🌱 Secret Garden growing medium recommendation

👉 For growing in a pot, we recommend a very well-drained and airy growing medium that allows excess water to drain quickly. Lavender prefers a growing medium that dries relatively quickly between waterings and should not be kept constantly moist.
