Hylotelephium 'Lime Zinger', frequently marketed as Sedum 'Lime Zinger', is a compact, highly decorative succulent perennial from the SunSparkler® series. It is commonly known as Stonecrop, and in English it may simply be presented as Garden Sedum.

It forms a low, dense clump with fleshy, lime-green leaves edged in red to burgundy. In late summer and early autumn, dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of pink appear, attracting pollinators and creating a beautiful contrast with the foliage.

🌿 Botanical characteristics

  • Recommended name: Hylotelephium 'Lime Zinger'
  • Commercial synonym: Sedum 'Lime Zinger'
  • Series: SunSparkler®
  • Common name: Stonecrop / Garden Sedum
  • Family: Crassulaceae
  • Plant type: deciduous succulent perennial
  • Compact, bushy and slightly spreading habit
  • Approximate height: 10–15 cm
  • Mature width: up to approximately 40–45 cm
  • Fleshy, lime-green leaves
  • Red to burgundy margins, more intense in good light conditions
  • Small, star-shaped pink flowers
  • Flowers predominantly in late summer and early autumn.

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight. Good light intensifies the lime coloring and red leaf margins.
  • Soil: very well-drained and moderately fertile; it tolerates poorer, stony soils well.
  • Watering: moderate to low. Once established, the plant has good drought tolerance.
  • Beware of excess water: heavy or constantly wet soils may encourage root and crown rot.
  • Fertilization: minimal; excessive fertilization may produce overly soft, less compact growth.
  • Uses: excellent for rockeries, borders, gravel gardens, slopes, containers and as ground cover when planted in groups.
  • Pruning: the dry growth can be removed in late winter or early spring.

❄️ Cold hardiness

'Lime Zinger' is a very cold-hardy perennial. The RHS rates it H7, meaning it tolerates temperatures below -20°C.

In Romania, well-established garden plants can overwinter outdoors in most regions of the country, provided the soil is well drained. Persistent winter moisture can be more dangerous than the cold itself.

Plants grown in containers are more exposed to root freezing and benefit from additional protection during periods of severe frost.

The intensity of the lime color and red margins may vary depending on light, temperature, season and stage of development. The plant may be delivered with or without flowers, depending on the season.

The leaves and stems may have small spots, tears, scars or other cosmetic imperfections that occur during growth, handling, transport or adaptation to new environmental conditions, without affecting the plant's viability.
