Hibiscus syriacus 'Duc de Brabant', also known as the Syrian rose 'Duc de Brabant', is a cultivar of the species Hibiscus syriacus from the Malvaceae family. This deciduous shrub is valued for its double flowers of intense purple and its ornamental appearance, being a popular choice in gardens, borders, or as a solitary plant. Originating from East Asia, 'Duc de Brabant' adds a vibrant contrast to landscapes due to its late blooming and hardiness.

Appearance of leaves and flowers

  • Leaves: The leaves are ovate, trilobed, 5-10 cm long, with serrated edges, dark green. They appear late in spring and fall late in autumn, providing a dense background for the flowers. The foliage is healthy and disease-resistant.
  • Flowers: The flowers are double, large, 8-10 cm in diameter, with overlapping petals of intense purple-violet, sometimes with a darker center. They have a velvety appearance and appear in clusters at the ends of branches from July to September-October. They are lightly scented and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width: Reaches 2-3 meters in height and 1.5-2 meters in width, forming an upright, well-branched shrub with a rounded habit.
  • Vigor: Moderate to fast growth, with woody stems and dense development. It is vigorous and adapts well to pruning.
  • Type: Deciduous, perennial shrub, with leaves falling in winter.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun for abundant flowering but tolerates partial shade. A sunny location ensures more intense flower colors.
  • Soil: Grows in fertile, well-drained soils, with neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5-7.5). Tolerates calcareous and poor soils but prefers moist soils.
  • Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year. Once established, it is tolerant of moderate drought.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 5-9 (down to -23°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. Tolerates winters well but mulch roots in colder areas.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance: Very resistant to cold, drought, urban pollution, and calcareous soils. Rarely affected by diseases or pests but may attract aphids; treat with organic methods if necessary.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring, once a year, to stimulate flowering. Avoid excess nitrogen.
  • Pruning: Prune in spring, removing dry or crossed branches to maintain shape and stimulate growth. Tolerates severe pruning for rejuvenation.
  • Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings or dividing clumps in spring.
  • Warning: Thorns can cause scratches. Leaves and stems are not toxic.

Usage

Hibiscus syriacus 'Duc de Brabant' is ideal for ornamental gardens, borders, hedges, or as a solitary plant. Its purple flowers add a dramatic focal point, combining well with lavender, sage, or white phlox. It is suitable for medium or urban landscapes, attracting pollinators and contributing to biodiversity.
