Dendrobium Stardust 'Firebird' - orange, lightly scented
Dendrobium Stardust is a compact hybrid, valued for its well-branched stems and the abundant flowering of a mature specimen. Each green stem is an active reserve: it can support leaves, roots and, in certain cycles, new flowers. Do not treat it like a Phalaenopsis flower spike, and do not cut it after the first flowering.
Light. The plant needs plenty of filtered light for sturdy stems and short internodes. An east- or southeast-facing window, with gentle morning sun after acclimatization, is suitable. Very dark leaves and elongated stems indicate insufficient light; dry, yellowish-brown spots indicate that strong sunlight was introduced too abruptly.
Temperature and growth rhythm. Normal room temperature is suitable, with gentle ventilation and no prolonged exposure to cold. New growth appears from the base or on existing stems; as they mature, the leaves and canes build the energy needed for flowering.
Watering. Water when the substrate is nearly dry, then allow the water to drain completely. Do not leave water in the cachepot. During very bright periods, the plant uses water more quickly; in winter, reduce the frequency according to the light level, not the calendar. Slightly wrinkled stems indicate prolonged thirst, while a soft base indicates excess water.
Fertilizing and substrate. During the active season, apply diluted orchid fertilizer after watering. Repot when new roots appear or when the bark has broken down, using an aerated orchid substrate. The pot should be stable but close in size to the volume of the roots.
After flowering. Keep the green stems. Remove only stems that are completely brown and dry, using clean scissors. A plant allowed to produce several mature canes has a better chance of reblooming than one that has been pruned aggressively.
Firebird. The orange flowers have a subtle fragrance and become more expressive in good light, without direct scorching. Do not move the plant repeatedly after the buds have formed: sudden changes in light, water or temperature can cause the buds to stop developing.
