Pineapple-scented sage - Salvia rutilans

Salvia rutilans is a synonym used in horticulture for Salvia elegans, commonly known as pineapple sage. It is an aromatic subshrub native to Mexico and Guatemala, valued both for its strongly pineapple-scented leaves and for its red, tubular flowers, which appear late in the season.

It forms an upright bush, 80–150 cm tall (sometimes taller under good conditions). The leaves are oval, light green, slightly fuzzy, and release a sweet pineapple fragrance when rubbed. The flowers are scarlet red, borne in spikes, and usually appear from August until the first frost. They attract bees, butterflies, and, in suitable climates, hummingbirds.

Easy care:

• Light: full sun or bright partial shade. The more light it receives, the better it will bloom.
• Temperature: sensitive to frost. It usually tolerates temperatures down to approximately -5°C. In Romania, it is safest to grow it as an annual or overwinter it in a sheltered place.
• Watering: regular. Keep the soil slightly moist, without waterlogging. This is not a drought-tolerant sage.
• Soil: fertile, light, and well drained.
• Pruning: Pinch out the tips to encourage a bushier plant. In spring, remove dry shoots or cut back the bush.

Uses:
The leaves can be used in teas, desserts, lemonades, fruit salads, or to flavor drinks. The flowers are edible and decorative. In the garden, it is excellent for borders, herb gardens, patio pots, and autumn arrangements. It overwinters well indoors in a bright location if temperatures drop below 0°C.

Note: Do not confuse this species with Salvia officinalis (common culinary sage). Pineapple sage has a completely different aromatic profile and is much more sensitive to frost. In areas with cold winters, protect the rhizomes with mulch or move the plant indoors in a pot.
