Hoya tannaensis

Hoya tannaensis is an epiphytic vine native to Vanuatu, published in 2011. It circulated as Hoya sp. Tanna. The foliage is glossy and ovate-pointed, with a sunken midrib. The flowers are star-shaped, cream-white to pink, with a pink corona and pink pedicels. The plant is sold as a fragrant plant; the scent is faint and not guaranteed. Flowering photographs show mature plants, not the batch for sale. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage. The leaves are ovate, pointed, glossy, and medium green, with a sunken midrib. The shoots are pale and may be covered with fine hairs. It has a vining habit and is suitable for growing on a support. In excessively harsh light, the leaf blade may turn yellow; this coloration is not variegation. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are star-shaped, initially cup-shaped and later opening fully. The corolla is cream-white, with a pink tinge on the underside and at the base; the corona is pink, with a lighter center. The pedicels may be pink. The gallery shows umbels on flowering plants, not on the batch for sale. Nectar may be visible. The flowers usually last a few days. The plant is sold as a fragrant plant; the intensity and character of the scent vary. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya tannaensis T.Green & Kloppenb., published in 2011. Its native range is Vanuatu. The plant grows as a vine in the humid tropical biome. Before publication, the material circulated as Hoya sp. Tanna; the collection locality cited in horticulture is Tanna Island.
