Hoya subcalva is a tropical vine from New Guinea, valued for its elongated, suede-like foliage and umbels of pink, pubescent, fragrant flowers. The name refers to an accepted botanical species, not a cultivar. Flower color may vary from pale pink to darker shades, sometimes with peach accents, depending on the season and growing conditions. The flowers are fragrant; some horticultural sources compare the scent to grape juice, but the exact note is not guaranteed with every bloom.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya subcalva Burkill is an accepted name, published in 1901. Its confirmed native range is New Guinea, within the humid tropical biome. The description “endemic to Papua New Guinea” is too restrictive, while horticultural references to the Solomon Islands are not included because they do not appear in the accepted range. The commercial origin Taiwan of this batch should not be confused with the species’ natural range.

Foliage and growth. In the specimens from this batch, the leaves are elongated, deep green, with a texture reminiscent of suede. Other horticultural descriptions mention smooth, oval, medium- to large-sized leaves without silver splash. The plant has a vigorous vining habit and can be trained on a support or allowed to trail. The foliage is not succulent in the sense of very thick-leaved species, and the substrate should not be kept compact or waterlogged.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are pubescent, usually pink, and arranged in umbels. Color intensity may increase or decrease depending on light and season, ranging from pale pink to darker shades, sometimes with peach accents. The flowers are fragrant. The comparison to grape juice is used by nurseries, but olfactory perception varies and is not a sales guarantee.
