Hoya rigida

Hoya rigida is a climbing species from Thailand, noted for its large, rigid, glossy foliage with strongly defined veins. Mature leaves have an architectural presence and can support long vines, making the plant suitable for training on a support. When flowering, the plant produces abundant umbels with creamy-white flowers and a white corona with a pale pink center. The fragrance is sweet, and the contrast between the robust foliage and delicate flowers gives it collector value.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are broad, oval to elongated, with a rounded or slightly cordate base, a leathery texture, and 3–5 prominent veins running from the base toward the tip. The plant has an epiphytic vine habit and develops most neatly on a stable support.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers have a creamy-white, slightly reflexed corolla and a white corona with a pink center. An umbel may contain numerous flowers, and horticultural sources describe a sweet fragrance that is easier to notice in the evening. Fragrance intensity may vary depending on flower maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya rigida Kerr is an accepted botanical name, published in 1939. The species is native to Thailand and is associated with tropical forests with a dry season. Morphological studies distinguish it from the highly variable Hoya verticillata complex by its rigid leaves, prominent veins, and floral characteristics.
