Hoya lacunosa 'Moonshine' (Taiwan)

Hoya lacunosa 'Moonshine' (Taiwan) is a cultivar of the species Hoya lacunosa. The foliage is small, oval or elongated, green, with silver splash markings; these are not white, chlorophyll-free variegation. The growth habit is compact and trailing, with thin vines. It produces umbels of small, creamy white, fragrant flowers. The vines can be trained onto a support or left to cascade. The silvery foliage is particularly attractive.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are small, thick, ovate or elongated. The silver pattern is splash, not a cream variegation band. The density of the markings varies from leaf to leaf and is more noticeable in good light; in low light, new growth may be greener. This selection should not be confused with 'Moonlight', which is circulated with narrower leaves and a more silvery appearance. The thin vines are well suited to cascading or to a light support.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, star-shaped, and grouped in umbels. At the species level, they are described as white or pale yellow, with a yellow corona and a fragrance often compared to cinnamon, more noticeable in the evening. The intensity and color may vary between specimens. Flowering depends on maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya lacunosa Blume is the accepted species, native from southern Myanmar to western and central Malesia. 'Moonshine' is the name under which this selection is circulated.
