Hoya elliptica (Turtle Shell Hoya)

Hoya elliptica (Turtle Shell Hoya) is an epiphytic or lithophytic vine native to Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Its elliptic, olive-green leaves have a network of raised, pale veins that resemble a turtle’s shell. This vein pattern inspired its common name. Under good growing conditions, it produces dense umbels with creamy-white, pubescent flowers and white coronas with dark pink to red centers. The flowers are fragrant, especially at night, and usually last 5–7 days.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are opposite, fleshy, elliptic, and olive-green to medium green. The midrib and lateral veins are pale, almost perpendicular to the axis, and raised on the upper surface. The net-like appearance is a characteristic of the species, not splash variegation. The plant has a vining habit; the stems can be trained onto a support. In cultivation, its growth is described as fairly fast.

Flowers and fragrance. The inflorescences are held laterally or nearly horizontally and usually contain 10–35 flowers measuring approximately 1 cm. The corolla is white or cream, with recurved, pubescent lobes; the corona is white with a dark pink, red, or purple center. The flowers are fragrant, with a sweeter note that is more noticeable at night. A bloom lasts approximately 5–7 days, depending on the microclimate. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya elliptica Hook.f. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1883. The species is native to Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in humid tropical biomes. Turtle Shell Hoya is a common name referring to the foliage, not a separate cultivar. The common name wax flower refers to the genus and does not specifically identify this species.
