Hoya cummingiana (golden, fragrant flowers) - D12, mature specimens!

Hoya cummingiana is the trade name for the accepted species Hoya cumingiana Decne., published in 1844. It is a hemiepiphytic subshrub native to the Philippines, Borneo, and Java. Its growth habit is compact and upright: the shoots lean rather than twining like a typical vine. The foliage is small, dense, and green. The flowers appear in umbels of 10–20, measuring approximately 1 cm, green when they open and yellow when fully mature, with a citrus fragrance. Hoya densifolia is a separate accepted species with a similar appearance.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are small, closely spaced along the shoots, ovate, and have short tips. The green color is saturated, while the veins remain subtle. It has a bushy growth habit: long shoots need support if you want a dense shrub; otherwise, they trail.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels usually contain 10–20 waxy, star-shaped flowers measuring approximately 1 cm. The corolla changes from pale green when opening to golden yellow at maturity; the corona may have a warmer, reddish center. The fragrance is noticeable; in Secret Garden batches, it is described with citrus notes, while horticultural reports sometimes add tropical fruit or cinnamon. The flowers last for several days. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya cumingiana Decne., Prodr. 8: 636 (1844), named after the collector Hugh Cuming. Hoya densifolia Turcz. is a separate accepted species, with which it was long confused; similarities in foliage and flowers do not make them synonyms.
