Hoya coriacea 'Silver'

Hoya coriacea 'Silver' is the variegated form of the botanical species—a vigorous tropical vine valued for the contrast between its thin, dark green foliage and its large, yellow, velvety inflorescences. In nature, the species has a wide range extending from Thailand to Malesia. Under good growing conditions, it can become a substantial plant, suitable for training on a sturdy support.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are smooth, glossy, relatively thin, and less succulent than those of many other Hoya species. The plant produces long shoots and has vigorous vine-like growth; as it matures, it needs space and a solid support. Its thinner foliage should not be treated like that of a highly succulent species, and the substrate should not be kept compact or waterlogged.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are star-shaped and pubescent, with a yellow corolla and a white corona marked with purple in the center. Mature inflorescences can become much larger than those of Hoya carnosa. The flowers are fragrant; one horticultural source describes the scent as spicy, while analysis of the volatile compounds confirms a complex aromatic profile.
