Hoya carnosa - mounted in ‘Snaily’ shell

Hoya carnosa is an epiphytic vine native from southern China to Laos, Japan, and Taiwan. The foliage is glossy, elliptic, and green; some leaves may have subtle silver spots, which do not make this lot the 'Freckles' selection. The specimen is mounted in a Snaily decorative shell on a hanging cord. Under good growing conditions, fragrant, waxy, pinkish-white umbels may appear. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and mounting. The leaves are opposite, thick, glossy, and elliptic to ovate. The green color may be darker or lighter depending on the light. The silver spots, when present, are characteristic of the species, not variegation, and not Freckles / Silver Splash. Snaily is the commercial name for the mounting style: the plant is placed in a shell rather than a conventional pot. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are pinkish-white, with a darker corona toward the center, and are grouped in umbels. They are fragrant, often easier to notice in the evening. The flowers last for several days, depending on the microclimate. Old peduncles may flower again. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya carnosa (L.f.) R.Br., published in 1810. The species is native from southern China to Laos and from Japan (southern Kyushu) to Taiwan. This lot is the green form, mounted in a Snaily shell, not a variegated selection and not the Freckles page.
