Hoya callistophylla D12

Hoya callistophylla is an epiphytic vine native to Borneo, cultivated for its thick foliage, with dark green pinnate veins on a green background. Mature leaves can reach approximately 25 cm in length and 9 cm in width. The shoots can become long, but growth is rather slow. Under good growing conditions, umbels of small, lightly fragrant flowers appear, ranging from pale yellow to cream or golden. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is thick and firm, elliptical or lanceolate, with prominent veins. On young leaves, the veins may be paler, then darken without reaching the almost black venation of the commercial selection 'Black Cat'. A mature specimen can produce long vines, but growth remains slow. The veining pattern is a characteristic of the species, not variegation.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, grouped in umbels containing several dozen flowers. Sources describe the color as pale yellow, cream, or golden, sometimes with brownish shades. They are lightly fragrant. Individual flowers last only a short time on the plant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. Hoya callistophylla T.Green is an accepted botanical name, published in 2000. The species is native to Borneo, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome.
