Gaura lindheimeri ‘Gaudi Red’ is a decorative perennial garden plant, valued for its delicate, airy habit and its pinkish-red flowers, which have a light, butterfly-like appearance. It is a variety very suitable for borders, flower beds, large planters, terrace pots, or natural landscaping, where it adds movement and color throughout the warm season.

The foliage can range from green to reddish-bronze shades, and the flowers appear successively on slender stems, creating a natural, light, and elegant effect.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Ornamental perennial plant with a compact and airy habit.
  • Small, pinkish-red flowers arranged on thin stems, with a delicate appearance.
  • Long flowering period, from summer to early autumn, under good light and care conditions.
  • Decorative foliage, sometimes with reddish or bronze tints.
  • Suitable for gardens, pots, planters, borders, and terrace compositions.
  • Attracts bees and other pollinators.

Growing and Care Conditions

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight. It can grow in partial shade, but flowering is usually reduced.
  • Watering: moderate. After planting, water regularly until established; later it tolerates short dry periods.
  • Soil: prefers light, well-drained soils. Does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
  • Fertilization: can be moderately fertilized during the growing season, avoiding excess nitrogen.
  • Maintenance: removing spent flowers can support a more orderly and prolonged blooming.
  • Cold resistance: it is an outdoor perennial suitable for gardens, but winter hardiness depends greatly on drainage and location. In well-drained soils, it can withstand approximately -15°C / -20°C. In cold areas or heavy soils, protection at the plant base is recommended.

Recommended Substrate

For planting in the garden, a well-drained, light, loose soil improved with mature compost is recommended. If the soil is clayey or retains water, incorporating coarse sand, perlite, fine gravel, or pumice stone is advised.

For pots and planters, use a substrate for outdoor plants mixed with perlite or another drainage material. The pot must have drainage holes, as excess water can harm the roots.

What Makes It Special

‘Gaudi Red’ is appreciated for the more intense color of its flowers and its light, airy appearance, very suitable for modern, natural, or romantic arrangements. The flowers appear on fine stems above the foliage, creating a sense of movement and brightness in the garden.

It is a good plant for combinations with lavender, sage, ornamental grasses, echinacea, nepeta, or other sun-loving perennials.

Note

The flowers are seasonal. The plant can be delivered without flowers or with flowers at different stages, depending on the season period and the available batch. After planting and acclimatization, it can continue to bloom if it receives sufficient light, well-drained substrate, and proper watering.
