Echinocereus pulchellus is a compact and distinctive cactus, appreciated for its small size, globular to slightly flattened body, and spectacular flowers in shades of deep pink to magenta-pink. The flowers can be very large in relation to the plant's size and may almost completely cover the body when several appear simultaneously.

It is a geophytic species with a thickened root, adapted to periods of drought; in its natural habitat, it may partially retreat into the soil when conditions become very dry.
