Cumulopuntia pentlandii

Cumulopuntia boliviana is a compact and hardy Andean cactus, currently also known as Cumulopuntia pentlandii, native to Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina.

It is a compact succulent cactus adapted to dry mountainous conditions and intense sun exposure. It forms short, thick segments that gradually group into dense clumps, while the surface is protected by prominent spines. In horticultural literature, local common names such as Copana, Espina, Kepo, and Puscaya are also documented for Cumulopuntia boliviana.

☀️ Growing conditions and care

• Light: prefers a very bright position and direct sunlight. Plants previously grown in a greenhouse should be gradually acclimatized to intense sun exposure.

• Substrate: very mineral-based, airy, and excellently drained.

• Watering: moderate during the active period; the substrate should be allowed to dry completely or almost completely between waterings.

• Humidity: prefers dry air and good ventilation.

• Winter: keep it much drier, especially at low temperatures.

• Fertilization: light feeding during the active season, using a fertilizer intended for cacti and succulents.

• Cold hardiness: it originates from cold Andean regions and tolerates low temperatures better than many tropical cacti, but when grown in a pot, we recommend protecting it from severe frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and moisture. We would not indicate an exact minimum temperature without reliable data for the commercially available form.
