Codiaeum variegatum ‘Nervia’, also known as croton, is a decorative tropical plant valued for its striking leaves, with a strong contrast between green and yellow or golden veins. The leaves have an elongated and slightly lance-shaped form, adding an extra touch of grace to its appearance. This plant is ideal for decorating indoor spaces due to its vibrant colors and unique leaf texture.

Care

Light:

• Prefers strong, indirect light to maintain the intense colors of the leaves.

• Can tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon, but strong midday sun can burn the leaves.

• In low light, the colors may fade.

Temperature:

• The ideal temperature is between 18-24°C.

• Does not tolerate cold or cold drafts. Avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Humidity:

• Needs moderate to high humidity. To increase humidity, you can spray the leaves with room temperature water or use a humidifier during the cold season or in dry spaces.

Watering:

• Keep the soil lightly moist, but not overly soaked.

• Water the plant when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch.

• Avoid standing water in the pot to prevent root rot.

Soil:

• Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Potting mixes for houseplants with added perlite are ideal.

Fertilizing:

• Fertilize the plant once a month during the active growing period (spring and summer) with a liquid fertilizer for decorative foliage plants.

• Reduce fertilizing during the resting period (autumn and winter).

Pruning:

• Remove dry or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Repotting:

• Repot the plant every 1-2 years or when the roots fill the pot. Use a pot with good drainage.

Common problems:

• Fallen or discolored leaves: Indicates stress caused by overwatering, lack of light, or temperature changes.

• Dry leaf edges: May be caused by insufficient humidity.

• Pests: Vulnerable to red spider mite, scale insects, and aphids. Inspect leaves regularly and treat with a suitable insecticide if necessary.
