Aristolochia macrophylla (Dutchman's pipe, Pipevine)

Aristolochia macrophylla, also known as "pipevine" or "Dutchman's pipe", is a perennial plant that is part of the Aristolochiaceae family. It is native to the eastern United States and is valued for its large, green, heart-shaped leaves, which can reach up to 30 cm in diameter.

Its flowers are also unique, having a shape that resembles a pipe or hookah, hence the name. These flowers are brown or purple in color and have a discreet but unpleasant smell to attract pollinating insects.

The pollination mechanism is quite unique: insects are attracted to the inside of the flower by the smell, where the pollen and the stigma are found. After the insect enters the flower, it is temporarily trapped inside until the flower opens, allowing the insect to exit and carry pollen to another flower.

The plant is used for ornamental purposes, especially to create shade or as a hanging plant on pergolas and other structures. It is also known to attract the spectacular butterflies of the "Battus philenor" species, which lay eggs on the plant. The larvae of these butterflies feed on the leaves.
