Serviceberry - Amelanchier spicata - sweet and aromatic fruits (organic cultivation)

Amelanchier spicata (also known as Raisin Tree or Serviceberry) is a highly valuable ornamental and edible shrub for Romanian gardens.

It is a compact shrub with vigorous growth through rhizomes, forming dense clumps 1–2 m tall (rarely up to 2.5 m) and gradually spreading. The leaves are oval, finely serrated, and glossy dark green, turning spectacular shades of intense red-orange and russet in autumn.

The flowers appear in early spring (April–May), before or together with the leaves. They are white and grouped in upright clusters, making them highly decorative.

The fruits are the plant’s main attraction and the reason it is called the Raisin Tree. They are small, round, and similar to blueberries or currants, turning an intense violet-black when ripe. They have a sweet, juicy, aromatic flavor with pleasant notes of wild apples and almonds. They can be eaten fresh straight from the plant and are also excellent for:

• jams, preserves, and syrups
• cakes, tarts, and desserts
• drying (they become similar to natural raisins)
• making wines, liqueurs, or teas

The fruits are rich in vitamins (C and E), antioxidants, and fiber, making them both decorative and practically useful—a true “superfruit” for the garden.
