Alocasia ‘Loco’ is a rare and unusual houseplant, valued for its unique and exotic appearance. It belongs to the Alocasia genus, which includes perennial plants with large leaves, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Eastern Australia. This variety stands out for its spectacular leaves and is a popular choice among ornamental plant enthusiasts.

Physical characteristics

Leaves: Alocasia ‘Loco’ has large, deep green, glossy leaves with wavy and curved edges. The leaf shape resembles a heart or an arrow, and the prominent silvery veins create an attractive visual contrast. These features give the plant a sculptural and dramatic look.

Size: It is a compact plant, reaching heights of about 30-50 cm, making it ideal for smaller indoor spaces.

Origin and history

Alocasia ‘Loco’ is a cultivated hybrid, first introduced in 2010 by Deroose Plants from Apopka, Florida. It is considered a mutation of Alocasia ‘Polly’, a hybrid resulting from the crossing of Alocasia sanderiana and Alocasia longiloba ‘Watsoniana’. The plant was reintroduced to the market in 2023 after nearly disappearing from circulation, highlighting its rarity and value.

Care requirements

To thrive, Alocasia ‘Loco’ requires specific conditions similar to its natural tropical environment:

Light: Prefers bright indirect light. Direct sun exposure can burn the leaves.

Soil: Needs well-drained soil rich in organic matter. We recommend a substrate specific for Araceae.

Watering: The soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, to which the plant is sensitive.

Humidity: Appreciates high humidity, ideally above 60%, to mimic tropical conditions.

Height including pot: approx. 15 cm
