Adenium obesum, also known as “desert rose”, is a succulent plant with an exotic appearance, valued for its thickened trunk (caudex) and large, brightly colored flowers that resemble those of plumeria or hibiscus. Native to the arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, it is grown both as a decorative potted plant and as a succulent bonsai.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

Form: A perennial plant, slow growing, with a thick, swollen base trunk (caudex) that stores water. In its natural habitat, it can reach over 2 m, but in cultivation it is kept small, often between 30–80 cm.

Leaves: Lance-shaped, glossy, dark green, grouped at the tips of the branches. They fall in the cold season for species grown in cooler areas (semi-deciduous).

Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped, with 5 petals. Colors vary from pink, red, white, purple, bicolor, or with contrasting edges. Blooming occurs in spring and summer, sometimes in waves throughout the year under ideal conditions.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

Light: Prefers direct sunlight – at least 4–6 hours a day. Without enough light, flowering is poor and the caudex does not develop well.

Watering: Low. Water only when the soil is completely dry. During the resting period (autumn-winter), watering is drastically reduced or stopped completely.

Soil: Very well drained. Use a sandy or rocky substrate, special for cacti and succulents, with added perlite or pumice stone.

Temperature: A warmth-loving plant. Must be protected from temperatures below 10°C and kept away from cold drafts.

Humidity: Prefers dry air. Does not require misting.

Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring–summer), apply liquid fertilizer for flowering plants once a month.

Propagation: By seeds (for interesting caudex shapes) or by cuttings (faster, but with less prominent trunk).

Shaping: Can also be grown and shaped as a succulent bonsai, being very popular in collections.

Adenium obesum is a plant with an exotic look, combining the beauty of tropical flowers with the unusual shape of the trunk. It is ideal for large pots, sunny terraces, and modern decorations, but requires a minimum of careful care to maintain its health and showiness.
