Gymnocalycium baldianum, also known as the flowering Chinese cactus, is a species of round cactus native to Argentina, popular for its compact shape, easy care, and spectacular flowers in various shades of red, pink, or violet.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Form: Small-sized cactus, with a spherical or slightly flattened body, dark green to blue-green, with a diameter of 6–10 cm at maturity. It does not form sharp spines, making it easy to handle.

• Ribs: Has 8–12 rounded ribs, separated by deep grooves. The areoles are small and evenly spaced.

• Spines: Thin, curved, pale yellowish-white or gray, non-aggressive, arranged radially around the areoles (4–8 radial spines, no prominent central spines).

• Flowers: Large, cup-shaped, pink, bright red, violet, or white, appearing in spring or summer from the upper part of the plant. Sometimes the flowers are fragrant.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers filtered sun or strong indirect light. It can also be kept in direct sun, but gradually, to avoid burning the skin.

• Soil: Well-drained, sandy or rocky. A substrate for cacti and succulents with added perlite or gravel is recommended.

• Watering: Low. Water only when the substrate is completely dry. In the cold season, watering is stopped completely, especially if the plant is kept in a cool place.

• Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures. It can tolerate low temperatures (even close to 0°C) if kept dry during winter.

• Fertilizing: During the growing season, a liquid fertilizer for cacti can be applied once a month.

• Flowering: Begins to bloom even at a young age if kept in good light conditions and rested during the cold season.

• Propagation: Can be propagated by seeds or by separating any basal offsets.

Gymnocalycium baldianum is a perfect plant for collections of succulents and cacti, as well as for beginners, due to its easy care. Its colorful and abundant flowering makes it an excellent choice for lovers of compact plants with a strong decorative effect.
