Hoya macrophylla 'Albomarginata'

Hoya macrophylla 'Albomarginata' is the selection with true marginal variegation: the center of the leaf remains green, while the edges are cream to white. The leaves are broad, elliptical, waxy, with prominent venation. 'Albomarginata' describes the position of the variegation, not a form with internal patterning. It produces umbels of small, star-shaped flowers, white-pink to pale pink, usually fragrant in the evening. Commercial imports come from Taiwan; the species' native range is elsewhere.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is large, elliptical, thick, with clear veins that segment the leaf blade. The variegation is marginal: the cream-white tissue along the edge contains less chlorophyll than the green center. The width and regularity of the margin vary between leaves. On new growth or under light or temperature stress, the pale areas may temporarily turn pink. The plant has a vining habit; it can be trained onto a support or left trailing. This lot contains several rooted cuttings per pot, and the vine tips have been trimmed.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, star-shaped, and grouped in umbels. Horticultural sources describe them as white-cream to pale pink, often with a more noticeable fragrance at night. The number of flowers per umbel and their shades may vary. Flowering is not guaranteed.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya macrophylla Blume is the accepted name, published in 1826–1827. Hoya browniana is a synonym of this species. Hoya clandestina is no longer treated as a synonym here: in the current treatment, it is placed under Hoya latifolia. Hoya macrophylla Wight is an illegitimate homonym, separate from the name published by Blume. Taiwan is the commercial source of this lot, not its native range.
