Hoya lucardenasiana *fragrant

Hoya lucardenasiana is an accepted species from the Philippines, published in 2009. It has a compact habit, with glossy green foliage; new leaves and those kept in intense light may develop reddish tones. The flowers are medium-sized, fragrant, and produce abundant nectar. The vines do not twist strongly and are better suited to a hanging basket than to a vertical support. Under good conditions, flowering may also occur on still-small plants throughout the warm season.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are green, glossy, medium-sized, and ovate. New growth often has a reddish tint. In bright light, the foliage may take on a reddish color. The plant has a compact, vigorous habit once established; horticulturally, the vines are described as only weakly twining.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are medium-sized and usually last 5–7 days. They are fragrant; horticultural observations compare the scent to caramel-like notes / Hoya brevialata and, in older commercial sources, to Hoya burtoniae. Nectar appears quickly after opening. Fragrance intensity and color may vary between blooms.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya lucardenasiana Kloppenb., Siar & Cajano is the accepted name, published in 2009. The type specimen comes from Luzon (Laguna, Siniloan). The species was named after Lourdes B. Cardenas. In horticulture, it is placed in section Acanthostemma; this is a group-level classification. Commercial imports from Taiwan do not represent the natural range.
