Rare and popular species of potted orchids

Specii rare si populare de orhidee in ghiveci

Rare and popular potted orchid species - Phalaenopsis, Zygopetalum, Cambria, Vanda, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Cattleya Orchids.

Phalaenopsis Orchids

Phalaenopsis Orchids

The species of the genus Phalaenopsis and their hybrids represent, without any doubt, the most popular among the orchid varieties grown by collectors, from amateurs to professional enthusiasts..

All the more so in recent decades, due to the special interest in this genus, and the efforts of growers and hybridizers have followed this trend, giving rise to a multitude of forms, colors, and fragrances that can satisfy any demands. Another aspect that makes Phalaenopsis species so appreciated is the ease of crossing these orchids with species from the genera Ascocentrum, Ascocenda, Vanda, Doritis, Doritaenopsis, Rhynchostylis, resulting in an impressive complex of spectacular hybrids.

Vanda Orchids

Vanda Orchids

Of rare beauty among orchids, both chromatically and morphologically, with shades of violet to natural blue, Vanda prefers lignicolous habitats, even on fallen logs, without requiring the roots to penetrate a substrate, since the moisture absorbed from the air and the ability to fix large amounts of water in the root tissue during torrential rains, which is then released to the plant tissues, satisfy the moisture needs of the species in the genus.

Watering and growth system for the genus Vanda must take into account the high hydrophilia of the genus, as the plants will absorb a larger volume of water as they grow.

Zygopetalum Orchids

Zygopetalum Orchids

The species of the genus Zygopetalum are especially noted and appreciated by collectors for their fragrant, waxy flowers with long-lasting retention, which appear several times a year and display a spectacular color range varying from white, green, purple, dark violet, burgundy, and dark pink, with various patterns of spots of different sizes.

Paphiopedilum Orchids

Paphiopedillum Orchids

The name of orchids from the genus Paphiopedilum, in Romanian, namely "Venus's Slipper," is a translation of the scientific name. The flower's lip forms a small pouch reminiscent of Peep Toe women's shoes.

The Paphiopedilum Orchid is a compact plant, with relatively frequent and long-lasting flowering - flowers lasting between 6 weeks and 3 months - easy to grow in apartment conditions. It blooms in autumn, summer, and spring, once up to 3 times a year.

Cattleya Orchids

Cattleya Orchids

Cattleya species and hybrids are preferred by collectors and growers for their spectacular colors, large to very large flowers, or, conversely, medium-sized, in which case they form abundant flower clusters, and for their intense fragrance, being probably one of the most intensively cultivated genera worldwide.

Known for their long lifespan, Cattleya specimens can live up to 20 – 30 years, reaching impressive sizes if the necessary conditions are met.

Cambria Orchids - intergeneric hybrids

Burrageara Orchids

Intergeneric hybrids - "Cambria" is the generic trade name for hybrids obtained from crossing botanical species of Oncidium, Miltonia, Brassia, and Odontoglossum, in various parental formulas.

Flowering can occur in any season, depending on environmental conditions. The growth of Cambria nothogenus hybrids is generally easy, without causing particular problems.

Cymbidium Orchids

Cymbidium Orchids

Species of the genus Cymbidium are perhaps the most appreciated flowers in terms of global horticultural trade, mainly due to their high productivity of flower spikes, ease of growth, size, persistence, floral coloration, and presence of fragrance. The species considered classic come from the hilly regions of Nepal and Sikkim, rich in sun, where however a rather cold climate predominates, and growers of this group must reproduce these conditions to enjoy successful flowering.

In terms of size, species of the genus Cymbidium are divided into two groups: standard / classic and miniature or "Chinese cymbidiums", although recently crosses between the two forms have been made. Taxa with pendulous inflorescences have been created using, among others, species such as devonianum and aloifolium.

Miniature or "indoor" Cymbidiums are known in cultivation and among collectors by the generic acronym HTC (Heat Tolerant Cymbidium). In this functional and geographic group are included small-sized taxa (30-50 cm, compared to 80+ cm in classic species), with strongly fragrant, durable flowers (at least 4 weeks), on numerous, erect or pendulous stems, multifloral (5-60 flowers), which grow and bloom in tropical climates lacking drastic thermal differences between day and night.

Dendrobium orchids

Dendrobium orchids

Dendrobium represents a genus with high diversity, this aspect being implicitly reflected in the environmental requirements and also in the conditions necessary to ensure successful cultivation..

Dendrobium species and hybrids are preferred by collectors and growers for their spectacular colors and abundant blooms, the flowers often being fragrant.

A common feature of species in the Dendrobium genus is the initial period of growth followed by a rest period during the year, and the watering schedules and temperature values vary according to the period passed. The flowers persist from one day, in exceptional cases, up to several weeks, this aspect depending on the species.
