Hoya lacunosa 'Langkawi Island

Hoya sold as Hoya lacunosa 'Langkawi Island' is a cultivar of the species Hoya lacunosa, not a separate species. It has a compact growth habit, with dense foliage of small, oval, pale green leaves that are sometimes slightly yellowish. In bright light, the leaves may develop reddish or purple tones, and the veins become more visible. The flowers are small and fragrant, horticulturally described as white with a yellow center; the shade may vary. The vines can be trained on a support or left to trail.

Foliage and growth. This selection has smaller, denser leaves than the typical form of the species. The leaf blade is oval with a pointed tip, and the surface may appear slightly sunken between the veins, a characteristic of the species. Pale green or slightly yellowish coloring is common; in sunlight, red or purple tones may appear. Splash, if present, is not identical on every leaf.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and grouped in umbels. Horticultural descriptions of this clone indicate white flowers with a yellow center and a corona with more rounded apexes. At the species level, the fragrance is often compared to cinnamon and is more noticeable in the evening. Its intensity and shade may vary between specimens.

Horticultural identity. Hoya lacunosa Blume is the accepted species, native from southern Myanmar to western and central Malesia. 'Langkawi Island' is a commercial clone, also circulated under the collection number EPC-523.

The pot diameter is 10.5 cm. Large specimens for this selection are sold. The plants display characteristic coloration and imperfections on some leaves or vines.
