Cleistocactus winteri (Hildewintera aureispina) – Monkey’s Tail Cactus, a cactus with trailing stems and spectacular flowers
Cleistocactus winteri (syn. Hildewintera aureispina), commonly known as Monkey’s Tail Cactus, is a cactus native to Bolivia, valued for its long, arching or trailing stems covered with fine, golden spines, which give it a monkey’s-tail-like appearance.
As it matures, the plant forms dense clumps, and its stems may exceed 1 meter in length under optimal conditions. In spring and summer, mature specimens produce large, tubular flowers in intense shades ranging from orange-red to salmon, creating a spectacular contrast with the golden spines. Due to its trailing habit, it is one of the most appreciated species for hanging pots, where its decorative appearance can be best showcased.
